The new BAS Agent Laws commenced on 1 March 2010. This resulted in bookkeeping in Australia becoming a recognised profession. Our Certificate IV in Bookkeeping is recognised by industry leading Associations in Australia.
From March 1, 2012, bookkeeping becomes a regulated profession. If you want to register as a Business Activity Statement (BAS) agent you will need to meet a number of educational requirements.
Once you have completed the IBI Bookkeeping course, you will be recognised by the Tax Practitioners Board as having completed the prescribed educational qualification to register as a BAS Agent and fulfil BAS agent responsibilities.

What Will You Learn?
Our Certificate IV in Bookkeeping course is specifically designed to teach you all facets of bookkeeping practices including Microsoft Excel and MYOB software.
You shall learn how to:
- Establish and maintain both cash and accrual accounting systems,
- Complete Business Activity Statements
- Instalment Activity Statement tasks,
- Establish and maintain a payroll system,
- Prepare financial statements,
- Other office taxes, payroll and developing management systems for organisations and
- How to maintain asset and inventory records.
Additionally, you will develop a broad range of general bookkeeping and financial industry competencies including applying industry best practice and principles in customer service, good communication skills, software technology, as well as health, occupational and safety practices.
To register as a BAS Agent you must complete at least a Certificate IV in Bookkeeping, and have successfully completed a Board approved course in GST/BAS taxation principles.
Experienced bookkeepers will need to formalise their skills and experience to meet these educational requirements. Many will need to complete a qualification but those with extensive work experience may be able to use this experience as credit towards the qualification through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.
Course Outline & Structure
Our Certificate IV in Bookkeeping (FNS40210) course is comprised of 13 units of competency
- 4 industry core units;
- 7 sectoral core units;
- plus 2 elective units.
Our Certificate IV in Bookkeeping course has been developed under the new Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) (released in 2011). Therefore the course is government-accredited and nationally recognised.
Our bookkeeping course is ideal if you wish operate a bookkeeping business, or as a bookkeeper contract or employee within an organisation. The course is also suitable for you if you are seeking a new career in a bookkeeping role.
Course Prerequisites
Our Certificate IV in Bookkeeping requires you to have either previously
- completed a Certificate III in Financial Services (FNS30110) OR
- undertaken relevant work experience.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you have prior experience or other qualification and wish to undertake the Certificate IV in Bookkeeping to formalise this experience to ensure compliance with Government changes then RPL may be available to you. You simply need to provide IBI with evidence of competency for the units offered within this qualification.
Skills Victoria Funding
The IBI has successfully secured government funding through the Skills Victoria program. If you qualify for Skills Victoria funding the price of the Bookkeeping course is only $495. Please note that the funding does not need to be repaid.
